Women’s Rights Deteriorate in Latin America

In Novela, Novela, we learn about a Nicaraguan soap opera that explores women's rights and issues. As Women's History Month and International Women's Day celebrations, commemorations and conferences take place, it is crucial to examine the current state of women's rights both within and beyond our borders. The America's Program website (part of the International Relations Center) published an article that highlights the legislative challenges, disadvantatges and obstacles women continue to face. Writer Laura Carson affirms, "Sadly, the tendencies mentioned above are growing, not abating. The attempts to roll back progress on sexual and reproductive rights, the degradation of womens work, and rising violence against women are characteristics of the twenty-first century. Many of us had hoped by now to see a better future for our daughters. But today, even to just reverse these trends will take all our efforts--and theirs as well."
