Want Kids to Eat Their Veggies?
Have you seen Young Agrarians? This film describes an organic farm in California where youth are learning to plant the seeds for a sustainable future. Well half way across the country, students are learning to love vegetables by spending time growing vegetables in the heart of Washington, DCs famous National Mall. The garden was set up by Alice Walters as a miniature re-creation of the Edible Schoolyard, a one-acre garden at the Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School in Berkeley, CA. Ms. Waters lives in Berkeley and has run Chez Panisse, her immensely influential restaurant, for more than 30 years. At the Berkeley garden, which was set up in 1995, students help to plant and harvest fruits and vegetables, then cook and eat meals using their own produce. "It makes the connection for them and pulls them into the magical experience of the kitchen," she said. "If they grow it, we find, they'll probably eat it."
