SIngle Mothers Driven to Ranks of Working Poor
In the film Struggling to Survive eastern Kentucky women explain the hardships of the living wage crisis in their communities. This growing economic phenomenon of working full time but still earning below the poverty line is particularly hurting single mothers. Amy de Paul of AlterNet reports on how Congress is now expected to pass reforms that make it even more difficult for single mothers on welfare to obtain a higher education. Rather than encouraging single moms to aquire better job training, skills and attend college programs, the goal of welfare reformers is to push single working mothers into dead-end, minimum wage jobs.
