Media That Matters and Community Food Security
Last Monday, MediaRights moderated the Media Workshop at the 8th Annual Community Food Security Coalition Conference in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Moderated by MediaRights Director of Education & Outreach Shira Golding, the workshop highlighted the power of media in communicating the value of healthy eating, local/sustainable food production and environmental protection. Writer Anna Lappé of the Small Planet Institute (Festival Jury member and MediaRights contributor) discussed how Agribusiness uses media to influence public discourse and how independent media makers can collaborate with grassroots groups to combat these corporate messages. Sarah Hesterman, Director of Seeds of Hope: South Africa, screened her film and spoke about the ability of films to tell food security success stories. Sarah recently founded a new independent production company called Creative Realization and she is working on a feature-length documentary on sustainable development. Diane Hatz of the Global Resource Action Center for the Environment screened The Meatrix and talked about the process of collaborating with Free Range Graphics to create the highly successful flash animation on factory farming. The over 50 workshop participants represented community food security organizations around the country and were eager to learn about how they can integrate film and video into their work effectively. Many were interested in screening Seeds of Hope and The Meatrix in their communities. Others were excited about the idea of producing a video about their own community project. One participant shared, "I have always wanted to do something with media and am inspired by the work that's being done and prompted to start working on my own project."Published on October 21, 2004
