Extending the Voting Rights Act
Have you seen Battleground Minnesota? Hip-hop activists Shakademic and Glenn Scott take to the Minnesota streets to raise awareness on voter registration and voting practices before the 2004 elections. But their message is clear: civic engagement is not regulated to presidential elections. Demos is collaborating with other New York organizations on a series of panels surrounding the Voting Rights Act. The Voting Rights Act has shaped the nation�s political landscape like no other legislation enacted in recent times. Signature provisions of the law are set to expire in 2007. What have these provisions, including bilingual ballots and voting rights mandates meant to the political process in New York City? What will be lost if the expiring provisions are not extended?
