Corporate Discrimination
The Children of Birmingham is a youth-produced animation that celebrates the participation of children in the struggle to end segregation. Jim Crow might be long gone but discrimination based on race unfortunately persists in the US as is evident in this recent news: Large corporations provide jobs for thousands of people and take pains to fairly represent their diverse working populations through exhaustive employment policies, in an effort to create equality. Discrimination, however, is still an issue and, more often than not, goes unnoticed. In a recent decision approved by the U.S District Court, one corporation's discriminatory practices were blown wide open. Abercrombie and Fitch has agreed to pay $40 million to settle a class-action discrimination law suit. The lawsuit, filed by nine minorites who were denied jobs or fired based on their race, accused the company of executing hiring practices that exclude minorities and adopting a virtually all-white marketing campaign. The settlement money will go to black, Hispanic and Asian employees and job applicants. The settlement requires the company to implement new policies and programs to promote diversity and prevent discrimination in its workforce. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission estimated the lawsuit would affect more than 10,000 Hispanic, Asian or black men and women. Learn more.
