April 22: Media That Matters Screening with Immigrant Heritage Week
Declared an official, annual celebration by Mayor Bloomberg, Immigrant Heritage Week is a unique celebration of the vibrant immigrant cultures, heritage, and communities found in every corner of the City.
Media That Matters and Breakthrough have partnered to present this free workshop at the Paley Center, NY.
Join us as we screen a curated selection of short films and discuss how we can use short film to spark action on issues directly and indirectly associated with immigration in our schools and communities. Breakthrough is a human rights organization using innovative media to talk about immigrant rights. Join us while we present real life simulations of our latest campaigns, ICED - I Can End Deportation and End Homeland Guantanamos. In our cutting edge video game ICED, step into the shoes of an immigrant and learn how U.S. immigration laws detain and deport immigrants while denying them due process and human rights. Play the role of an undercover journalist in Homeland Guantanamo, our interactive website using web 2.0 tools to spotlight the inhumane conditions being faced by nearly 300,000 people in immigrant detention.
Some of the films to be screened include A Girl Named Kai, America for Dummies, Slip of the Tongue, and Something Other Than Other.
Wednesday April 22, 4:30-6:00 p.m.
Paley Media Center, 25 West 52nd Street (between Fifth and Sixth Avenues)
Admission: Free and open to the public
