November 20: Democracy In Dakar’s Hip-Hop In Senegal) Screening at NYU, New York, NY at 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

The film Democracy In Dakar will be screening this Thursday as part of NYU International Education Week. Democracy in Dakar is a feature length film from which Hip-Hop In Senegal (part of the Eighth Annual Media That Matters Festival) was taken as a short. The film follows rappers, DJs, journalists, professors and people on the street at the time before during and after the controversial 2007 presidential election in Senegal and examines hip-hop's role on the political process. Originally shot as a seven part documentary mini-series released via the internet - the documentary bridges the gap between hip-hop activism, video journalism and documentary film and explores the role of youth and musical activism on the political process. The screening is free and open to the public, and will be accompanied by a live performance and panel discussion. RSVP is required! The event will take place on November 20th from 6:30 to 9:30, at NYU's Kimmel Center Eisner and Lubin Auditorium (4th Floor) at 60 Washington Square South.

November 19: Media That Matters Screening At New Mexico State University, Las Cruces, NM at 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Campus Progress, a student social justice organization at New Mexico State University, will be screening films from the Media That Matters Festival. Campus Progress acts to empower new progressive leaders nationwide as they develop fresh ideas, communicate in new ways, push policy outcomes in a progressive direction, and build a strong progressive movement. They are incorporating Media That Matters short films into their campus programming for the fall. The screening will take place Wednesday, November 19th from 7:30 to 9:30 pm in the Garcia Annex Room 206, New Mexico State University, Las Cruses, NM 88003. November 15: YouthNoise and Kelly Tsai at Clean Water Fundraiser at 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.

This Saturday, YouthNoise and Parsons School of Design will be hosting DROP: A Water Fundraiser, to raise money for international clean water access. The evening will feature work by artists Naia Kete and Martin Purtil, as well as spoken word performance by Kelly Tsai. This event is full of Media That Matters friends! YouthNoise was featured in the Take Action Links for eighth annual festival film, A Loud Color, spoken word poet Kelly Tsai starred in the seventh annual festival film By-Standing: The Beginning of an American Lifetime and our Good Food collection also showcased a film entitled Water Warriors , which deals with issues relating to water rights. Keep an eye out for more updates on this issue and the key players in the movement to improve access to water. The DROP Fundraiser will take place this Saturday, November 15th at the NYC Firehouse Museum in Soho, at 278 Spring St., and will run from 8:30pm to 12:30 am. Go here to RSVP.

NEW Take Action Pack from Media That Matters: The Global Community

Media That Matters Film Festival has produced a Brand New Take Action Pack, focused on The Global Community. This month's package focuses on two films from the Eighth Annual Festival ,A Nomad's Life, and African Underground: Hip-Hop In Senegal. Both films deal with themes of globalization and cultural identity, and our package of links and resources can hopefully provide our viewers with tools to take action in their communities both globally and locally. November 15: Eighth annual Media That Matters screening in Barcelona, Spain at 6:00 p.m.

Novermber 15: Meerkat Media Collective Hosts Fundraiser/Media Mixer at DCTV in New York, NY from 8 -11 p.m.

Meerkat Media Art Collective, 2008 entry winners with Every Third Bite and 2006 winners for How Walmart Came to Haslett, are hosting a fundraiser/media mixer to raise money for their upcoming feature film A Little Death by Gina Telaroli, a member of the collective. The event will take place at the DCTV headquarters on 87 Lafayette St. with food, beer, music, and films! Entry fees range from $8-20 (sliding scale) and drinks run about $3. November 15: Media That Matters Screening at Facing Race Conference in Oakland, CA

The Applied Research Center will be hosting a national conference entitled Facing Race, which will tackle issues of racial justice in 21st century America. Scholars and activists from across the country will convene to discuss ways in which we can, as a nation, "Define Justice and Make Change" across color lines. Topics set for discussion include Post-Election Reflections, Race and the Global Economy, Multiracial Organizing, and Challenging Colorblindness. The conference schedule will feature a series of speakers, panel discussions, workshops, and film screenings. Arts Engine and the Media that Matters Festival has compiled a group of films from past festivals that deal with race and will be included as part of the conference program. The Media That Matters films from the eighth annual collection include: Perversion of Justice, Something's Moving, A Loud Color, African Underground: Hip-Hop in Senegal, and America for Dummies. Selections from previous festivals include Sovereign Nation, Rights on the Line, and Still Standing. The conference runs from November 13-15 at the Oakland Marriott City Center. November 15th: ‘Recycle’ to Screen at Margaret Mead Film Festival

Recycle, a film which screened in the Sixth Annual Media That Matters Festival, is set to show at the annual Margaret Mead Film Festival in New York this weekend. The Margaret Mead Festival is the nation's longest-running and premiere showcase for international documentaries, screening films on a diverse array topics by filmmakers from all across the world. Recycle, by directors and producers Vasco Lucas Nunes and Ondi Timoner, tells the story of Miguel Diaz, a homeless man in Los Angeles who collects recyclable materials to build a community garden on the median of the street where he lives. The powerful 6-minute film captured the Sustainability Award in the Sixth Annual MTM Festival, and is also included in Good Food, a collection of MTM films focusing on food and sustainability. This year's Margaret Mead Festival runs from November 14th to 16th at the New York Museum of Natural History. Recycle shows at 7pm on Saturday, November 15th. November 5 - 7: Hip-Hop in Senegal Filmmakers celebrate African Underground/Obama Victory Tour with a weekend of screeni

Award winning 2008 Media That Matters Film Hip-Hop in Senegal, the first in a seven-part series documentary African Underground: Democracy in Dakar, documenting the influence of the underground Hip-Hop scene on politics in Senegal, celebrated Obama's presidential election with a weekend screenings extravaganza. Director Ben Herson, along with his record label/production company Nomadic Wax, presented the documentary on November 5th at the "Global hip hop comes to Brandeis!" concert as part of the Louis Louis 2008 festival. Another screening was held November 6th at Marian Court College followed by a discussion panel.
