October 10: Media That Matters: Good Food Premiere, Vancouver, BC

Ready for some film for thought? Arts Engine brings you a collection of short films on food and sustainability. From singing peanuts to teenage tomato-growers, these films will make you laugh, make you think and inspire you to take action for a healthy, sustainable and delicious future. Launching October 2006, "Media That Matters: Good Food" is the first FOCUS collection from the Media That Matters Film Festival. The films will stream online, screen around the country and be distributed on DVD to educators and activists. Media That Matters: Good Food premieres at the Community Food Security Coalition Conference in Vancouver on October 10th at 8pm. Arts Engine's Shira Golding will be at the premiere and at the conference, moderating two related workshops: The Media is the Message: What�s at Stake and the Power of Independent Media to Galvanize Communities Presented by Arts Engine Monday, October 9, 11am-12:30pm Presenters include Johanna Divine, Shira Golding, Melinda Hemmelgarn and Anna Lappé One of the best ways to effectively combat the super-sized advertising budgets and public relations spin machines of the fast food industry and agribusiness is to become media savvy advocates. This workshop will highlight how agribusiness and fast food use the media to shape public understanding about food security, and will showcase food security, sustainable food system, and public health advocates who themselves are harnessing the power of film and other media to educate and galvanize people to action. Meet individuals using media for social change, get a taste of media with a sustainable message, and discuss creative ways to use media in your own efforts. Media Bootcamp: Communicate Your Message Through Print, Video and Media Literacy Presented by Arts Engine Monday, October 9, 2:15-3:45pm Presenters include Johanna Divine, Shira Golding, Melinda Hemmelgarn and Anna Lappé In this hands-on workshop, participants will be divided into three tracks � print, video and media literacy � offering guidance on how to create and use media effectively in our individual and collective work. Print track participants will learn how to write more effectively; video track participants will explore ways to utilize film and make their own 30 second PSA; and media literacy track participants will explore curricula for being critical consumers. Media That Matters: Good Food Premiere Tuesday, October 10, 8pm Watch the films and enjoy a screening of Ripe for Change. Meet filmmakers and learn more about outreach goals. Media That Matters: Good Food is supported by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. Asparagus! at the Museum of Television and Radio

Asparagus!: A Stalk-umentary is part of the Museum of Television and Radio Doc Fest. Filmmakers Anne de Mare and Kirsten Kelly, winners of last year's MTR pitch workshop, take viewers to the community of Oceana County, Michigan�the self-proclaimed asparagus capital of the nation�which is facing economic ruin due to policies on free trade and the war on drugs that favor the Peruvian asparagus industry. Oct. 7: ACME Media Reform Summit

The Action Coaltion for Media Education is hosting the media reform summit Facing the Media Crisis: Media Education for Reform, Justice and Democracy. From October 6-8 in Burlington, Vermont, there will be over 50 workshops and 20 plenary keynotes including: Pacifica Radio's host Amy Goodman, author/speaker Bill McKibben, author/citizen activist Diane Wilson, U.S. Senate Candidate Bernard Sanders;and actor/activist David Strathairn. Arts Engine's Wendy Cohen is conducting a workshop, Media That Matters: Using Film to Engage Your Classroom and Community. Use film to turn awareness-raising into action. Get the tools you need to showcase thought-provoking films and run meaningful discussions that challenge audiences and plant the seeds for sustained community engagement. September 17: SAW Video, Ottawa, Canada

The Canadian Premiere of the sixth annual Media That Matters Film Festival is taking place on September 17th at SAW Video in Ottawa, Ontario. SAW Video is an artist-run-centre that supports ground breaking artistic production, presentation and programming of independent media. Phil Caron, the Canadian director of (Hate) Machine, from MTM 06, will attend the screening. "SAW has been part of almost all my work; it's the heart and soul of independent production here." This screening is presented by iSPY Productions, SAW Video and Phil Caron.
