Greetings! I just got back from a jam-packed weekend in Youngstown, Ohio where Media That Matters screened three times on July 9th and 10th as part of the 6th Annual Festival of the Arts Youth Media Film Festival. The screenings were hosted by the McDonough Museum of Art and showcased youth-produced work from Media That Matters as well as short films by local teens participating in the museum's EXcel program.
The local teen filmmakers, Desireé Fitzgerald, Tamara Perdue, Savonnah Hill, Maria Martinez, Sterling Vaught, Elmer Gonzalez, Eric Martinez and Jose Garriga, produced films on bullying, HIV and hip-hop and presented their work to an audience of family members, teachers, social workers and community members.
The response to both their films and those from Media That Matters youth was overwhelming. One person wrote: "Wow! We become so insulated in 'our' world. This brings it home — there's more to life than me. And young people are taking the lead — making their own way, showing us the way."
