Socially Conscious Films Honored by OSCAR

Posted on March 03, 2006

Millions of viewers around the world will tune into the 78th Annual Academy Awards this Sunday. But in addition to an evening of opulence and red carpet frenzy, the Academy is shedding light on many progressive issues. And I am not just talking about the Best Documentary category- these are commercial, mainstream, big budget features.

This year's Best Picture nominated films tackle homosexuality, transsexuality, institutionalized racism, women's rights and sexual harassment, terrorism and media censorship. Is Hollywood becoming more socially conscious, acknowlesdging the power of film to spur social change? Are we as audiences frustrated by the mainstream media's lack of critical consideration of pressing social issues? Are we therefore turning to films for these inspiring stories?

Let's hope this trend continues and enjoy the show on Sunday evening.
