What Happened To Current TV's Mission?

Al Gore's television project, Current TV is set to launch on August 1, 2005 with a very different structure than originally intended. At its inception, Current TV's mission was to offer an alternative to the right-wing, corporate dominated media. However, a few months before its launch, the network resembles more of a low-budget MTV than an interesting and challenging option for the 18-34 target audience.

Current TV will hopefully bring something new to the youth television table. In an article publishd on Alternet, Orville Schell, dean of the Berkeley School of Journalism and a member of Current's board of directors explains, "less and less they're trying to run a company with a social mission. They want something that's new and interesting and economically viable."
