Operation Truth
Posted on September 08, 2004
If you've watched Bush for Peace, then you've been introduced to an alternate vision of the world. In this striking short, Filmmakers Jen Simmons and Sarah Christman offer an optimistic remix of America's foreign policy and mililtary strategy.
While the debate about the legitimacy of the war in Iraq continues, a new nonprofit organization has been created to ensure that the voices of American troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan are heard.
From their site:
Operation Truth will educate the American public about the truth of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan from the perspective of the soldiers who have experienced them first-hand. Many of our government's policies and approaches to military operations have manifested themselves as problems on the front lines and back at home. Whether the subject is the role of private contractors in military operations, the lack of body armor for troops, the closing of V.A. hospitals, or the effects of "Stop-loss," the men and women who have served and who have returned to civilian life truly have a unique and politically valuable perspective.
In related news, Juan Carlos Zaldívar, Director of How to Make a Bird from last year's Festival has co-directed (with Tricia Regan and David O. Russell) a documentary about Americans serving in Iraq. Intended as a special feature on a special DVD release of Russell's Three Kings, the documentary offers haunting perspectives on the current war in Iraq. In a move reminiscent of Disney's Fahrenheit 911 pull-out, Warner Brothers has refused to include the documentary on the DVD, because it might be construed as partisan. Zaldívar, Russell and Regan are now considering alternate forms of distribution.
