New Media Arts Education Project

Posted on March 21, 2005

Our Just Media Project examines the important of media education and reform. At the heart of media literacy is obtaining hands on skills and knowledge of how media is created.

A new media arts education project called MAPS: Media Arts in Public Schools, launched in June of 2004 with a pilot program in Montana. MAPS has programs designed for middle school and high school. Both programs include Media Arts 1: Fundamental story development and screenwriting assignments; preliminary ‘hands-on’ technical skills; initial film theory and history; an emphasis on personal expression and self-fulfillment. The high school program then goes on to include Media Arts 2 & 3: The ‘business’ of media, motion picture and television development, production, post-production, marketing and distribution. An expanded technical sampler and an advanced film theory and history unit.

The pilot project was so successful that the Corvallis School District of Corvallis, Montana signed on for another year and made room for more students to join. MAPS is hoping to expand into other rural communities in 2005 and 2006
