This year's Women's Rights award winner, Novela, Novela, examines how a Nicaraguan sopa opera tackles issues of sexual assault, teen preganancy, emergency contraception, domestic violence and others.

In the current political climate in the USA, women's reproductive rights and freedoms are at the forefront of debate because they are being slowly stripped away. It has been nearly four months since the historic March for Women's Lives on Capitol Hill and Planned Parenthood of New York is organizing another March across the Brooklyn Bridge on August 28, 2004. New York City is the birthplace of reproductive freedom and it is crucial that issues of reproductive health including: global family planning, real sex education, accessible, safe and legal abortion, birth control options, the right to privacy regarding sexuality, and equal access to health care are part of the national political dialogue.
