Keep Your Eyes on the Prize
Posted on February 14, 2005
Last Friday, February 8th, MediaRights was proud to be a supporting organization at a screening of Eyes on the Prize hosted by the Tank in New York City. The screening was part of Downhill Battle's campaign to bring this pivotal documentary back to the public arena. Screenings are taking place during Black History Month both to commemorate the Civil Rights movement and call attention to the much needed reform of copyright laws and restrictions.
About 70 people attended this New York screening which was followed by two amazing speakers. Poet, activist and journalist Felipe Luciano (who is featured in a later part of the Eyes on the Prize series) addressed the importance of the testimonies and footage included in this documentary. Without having films like EYES widely available to the public, the successes, hardships, leaders and persecutors of the Civil Rights movement will be lossed. Professor Mickey Davis followed with a short discussion on the history of copyright laws and the uphill struggle we face to have those laws changed.
As part of this campaign, there have been screenings of Eyes on the Prize in 28 states.
Organize or attend a screening of your own!
