Copyrights and CopyNights
Posted on March 23, 2005
Copyrights and intellectual property rights are core components of the fight for media democracy. As our Just Media Project illuminates, media conglomeration is hindering expression, creativity and access to information. Organizations are joining forces in this fight and the Free Expression Policy Project has created an online survey to research how artists, writers, scholars, and other members of the public experience the conflict between copyright or trademark protection and "fair use." Fair use allows limited borrowing of copyright-protected works without permission, for purposes such as parody and commentary.
Thursday March 29, 2005 the Supreme Court will hear arguments in the MGM vs. Grokster case, which will ultimately determine the future of file sharing. CopyNight, a monthly gathering of people interested in copyright issues and ensuring freedom for artists, will be meeting for the first time on March 29th in 4 cities across the US: New York, San Francisco, Washington, DC and Santa Monica. To take part in one of these meetings or begin CopyNight in your city, visit CopyNight.org.
