Censoring War Films on Veteran's Day?
Posted on November 12, 2004
Veteran's Day is set aside to commemorate soldiers who risked and are risking their lives for this country. On the very day we should be honoring and upholding the fundamental freedoms this country prides itself on, some ABC affiliates censored "Saving Private Ryan" from the airwaves, deeming the Steven Spielberg World War II film too graphic and violent.
While the Federal Communications Commission never shunned the film and ABC had permission and an agreement to air the film in its entirety without editing, several stations including eight owned by the Sinclair Broadcast Group and four by the Belo Corporation decided not to air the film.
