Books Not Bars Follow Up
Posted on June 22, 2004
Have you watched WITNESS's Books Not bars? A follow-up video is being produced and WITNESS is looking for editors.
From WITNESS
After the success of our previous collaboration on the “Books Not Bars” Documentary (which was most recently honored with the Criminal Justice Award at the fourth annual Media That Matters Film Festival), WITNESS and the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights are working on a new video production. It will highlight the failures of the California Youth Authority through the stories of the children and families caught in the machinery of California's juvenile prisons.
Lawmakers and jailers in California are feeling the pressure as stories continue to emerge in the media and courts of the rampant human rights violations of children imprisoned by the California Youth Authority — violations that include sexual abuse, beatings, forced medication, and systemic medical and educational neglect. Our video will be directed toward policy makers, parents of imprisoned children, and community organizations that can be mobilized to call for a total reform of the system.
Production on the video is taking place during the summer of 2004, and WITNESS is currently looking for pro bono or low-cost editors proficient in Final Cut Pro to edit the production during the months of July and August. If interested, please contact us at volunteer@witness.org or call Paul Falzone at 718.783.2000 extension 302.
