Basic Human Needs

Posted on November 15, 2004

When people speak of solutions to world hunger, we usually think of fiscal AID, international and national economic inequality, unequal distribution between the rich and the poor, etc. However, if you’ve seen Seeds of Hope, you know that there are alternative ways people are coping with hunger. Seeds of Hope documents a group of women in South Africa who are using their own communities to grow food and nourish their children. Poor rural communities around the globe are looking internally to find solutions to the issue of hunger. In Latin America, a network of potato farmers created the International Potato Centre (CIP) with a mission to provide developing countries- mostly in Africa and Asia- with the knowledge and technologies needed to farm potatoes. To find out more information on the CIP read Paula Leighton’s article Latin American Potato Network to Help Africa and Asia. As people continue to die of hunger, we must be inspired by the previous stories and learn to use simple solutions to increase the amount of people with daily access to food. One way to do this is through environmental conservation. In the article Nature, Nurture and Culture, Wangari Maathai writes about the need to conserve the environment and the effects a changing environment has had on her community in Kenya.
