Awards Ceremony at HBO - Honoring Media That Matters

Posted on May 21, 2004

On May 19th, all 16 Festival films were honored with awards at our ceremony at HBO. Our host, Public Enemy's Chuck D, and special guests Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul and Mary, comedian Seth Herzog and Morgan Spurlock, Director of Super Size Me, helped us to celebrate all of the courageous filmmakers, many of whom came to New York City from far away.

Our Just Media award winners Malkia Cyril and Andrew Schwartzman gave truly inspiring speeches. Both drove home the point that independent media makers and media policy activists have to work together if we are to resist the corporate monopolization that is stifling America’s airwaves.

Many of the filmmakers are receiving $1,000 grants for outereach and distribution and all winners received one year memberships to the Association of Independent Video and Filmmakers and to Netflix.
