great film! there was a great article by George Packer about the garbage collectors in Lagos in the New Yorker a few months ago. Here's the link: http://www.newyorker.com/archive/2006/11/13/061113fa_fact_packer

one interesting theme that stood out to me throughout this film and was reinforced by the "Take Action" links afterwards: the film seems to urge its viewers to sympathize with the zaballeen for having the multinational companies come and collect the city's garbage. at times, the film tries to make the zaballeen out as very happy with what they do (one young man says "i love my job because i am free."). but at the same time, the zaballeen clearly want more out of their life (see, for example, the education scene). it is as if the film is trying to draw our sympathy both for the zabaleen's position in life (in the intro, one says "this is my fate") and for the fact that competition in the marketplace threatens that position in life.
